On January 28, 2025, the United Nations held a solemn ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivering a powerful message addressing the urgent issues of rising antisemitism and international hostages.

Calls for action and remembrance

During his remarks, Guterres condemned the alarming increase in antisemitic rhetoric and actions worldwide. He urged the immediate release of Israeli hostages and called for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. His statements reflect a growing concern among world leaders regarding the resurgence of hate and violence.

Condemnation of Holocaust denial

In addition to advocating for immediate humanitarian actions, Guterres also denounced the rise of Holocaust denial and the distortion of historical truths. He emphasized the importance of remembering the past to prevent similar atrocities from occurring in the future. UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang echoed these sentiments, warning of the pervasive threats posed by hatred and propaganda.

“We must stand together against the rise of antisemitism and ensure that the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten,” Guterres stated.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog joined the discussions, calling for coordinated international efforts to secure the release of hostages, particularly highlighting the case of Israeli-American soldier Omer Nutra. The ceremony also featured a poignant musical performance by the Lebensmelodien ensemble, known as “Melodies of Life,” which added a layer of remembrance to the proceedings.
