Drones illuminate Montserrat Abbey in tribute to Pope Francis

by editor

In a breathtaking tribute to Pope Francis, hundreds of drones lit up the night sky over Spain’s Montserrat Abbey on Saturday, just hours following his funeral in the Vatican. The stunning aerial display, which showcased the artistry of 200 drones, created recognizable Catholic symbols, including the Virgin of Montserrat, an image of Pope Francis, and the majestic abbey itself, set against the backdrop of the dramatic multi-peaked mountains.

A Night of Celebration and Remembrance

This spectacular event coincided with the Day of the Virgin of Montserrat, celebrated on April 26 each year. The stunning display was not only a tribute to the late pontiff but also a significant moment in the ongoing festivities marking the millennium of the Montserrat Abbey.

Historical Significance of Montserrat Abbey

Situated approximately 64 kilometers north of Barcelona, Montserrat Abbey is renowned for its rich history and cultural significance. This year, the monastery marks a remarkable milestone by celebrating its 1,000-year anniversary. It is particularly celebrated for housing some of the world’s most valuable medieval manuscripts, notably those containing Gregorian chants, which form an integral part of its heritage.

“The display formed Catholic icons including the Virgin of Montserrat, Pope Francis, the abbey itself, and the surrounding multi-peaked mountain.”
