Excitement peaks on Day 2 of Judo Grand Slam in Astana

The second day of the 2025 Judo Grand Slam in Astana brought together judo enthusiasts amid the city’s stunning architecture. Fans filled the arena, eagerly anticipating thrilling matches and remarkable displays of athleticism.

Notably present at the event were Kazakhstan’s President, Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and the President of the International Judo Federation (IJF), Mr. Marius Vizer, who added prestige to the occasion.

Highlights from the day’s competitions

The -73kg final showcased an exhilarating match between Switzerland’s reigning world champion, Nils Stump, and the UAE’s Karbek Naguchev. In a nail-biting finish, Stump executed his renowned uchi-mata technique just seconds before the end, securing a crucial score and clinching the victory.

“Competing in Kazakhstan was an incredible experience,” Stump shared after his victory.

The medal presentation was conducted by IJF General Treasurer Mr. Naser AL TAMIMI, celebrating Stump’s remarkable achievement.

In the -63kg category, Melkia AUCHECORNE of France triumphed in a fiercely contested match. Her efforts were acknowledged with a medal presented by IJF Guest Mr. Elliot MOSHOKE.

Meanwhile, Giorgia STANGHERLIN from Italy made her Grand Slam debut in the -70kg final against Yingying FENG from China. STANGHERLIN’s exceptional counterattack placed her in an advantageous position, allowing her to execute a successful hold down and secure the win. The medals for this category were awarded by CIFP Secretary General The Honorable Sunil Sabharwal.

Intense battles in the -81kg category

The -81kg final was highly anticipated as Japan’s two-time Olympic champion NAGASE Takanori faced off against Lee Joonhwan of Korea. Entering the match with a 1-2 record against Lee, Takanori aimed to even the score. However, it was Lee who emerged victorious in a spectacular display, receiving his medal from IJF Development Commission Member Mr. Khaled Barakat IBRAHIM.

The local crowd was treated to an electrifying day of judo, with bronze medals awarded to Kazakhstan’s own Yesset KUANOV and Abylaikhan ZHUBANAZAR. The audience was captivated by the impressive mix of skilled groundwork and breathtaking throws, leaving them with plenty to cheer about.
