Exciting performances mark Day 2 of the Judo Grand Prix in Linz

The second day of the Upper Austria Judo Grand Prix was filled with exhilarating judo matches, showcasing the skills of athletes from various nations. Notable victories included Slovenia’s Kaja Kajzer, the Esposito brothers from Italy, and Australia’s Aoife Coughlan, who each secured gold medals. Additionally, Austria’s Bernd Fasching delighted the local crowd by clinching a bronze medal, marking a day of excitement and national pride in Linz.

The judo community gathered once more in Linz, Austria’s picturesque capital, for an action-packed day. The event commenced with a formal ceremony celebrating International Women’s Day, featuring speeches by IJF Secretary General Dr. Lisa Allan and Dr. Martin Poiger, the President of the Austrian Judo Federation.

Outstanding performances in various weight categories

As the competition began, the middleweights took the spotlight. In the -63kg category, Slovenia’s Kaja Kajzer faced Japan’s So Morichika. The match extended into a tense Golden Score, but Kajzer ultimately emerged victorious, earning her first gold medal in this new weight division. His Excellency Kiminori Iwama, the Ambassador of Japan to Austria, presented the medals.

In the -73kg match, Giovanni Esposito of Italy battled against Daniel Szegedi, with a yuko securing Esposito’s first gold medal on the World Judo Tour—a significant milestone in his career. The medals were awarded by Mr. Alexander Jatsekvich, Head Refereeing Director of the European Judo Union.

Competing in the -70kg category, Australia’s Aoife Coughlan showcased her skills against Ida Eriksson. Coughlan delivered a stunning ippon, achieving her second Grand Prix gold medal. The medals were presented by the accomplished double Olympic and World Bronze Medallist, Mrs. Michaela Polleres.

In the -81kg division, Italy’s Antonio Esposito followed closely in his brother’s footsteps, successfully defending his title from the previous year with a graceful skipping ko-uchi-gari. The medals were awarded by Dr. Martin Poiger, highlighting the event’s significance.
