On the eve of the first anniversary of the Key Bridge tragedy, families of the six construction workers who lost their lives gathered in a solemn ceremony to honor their memory. Alongside Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Maryland Governor Wes Moore, they boarded a boat and cast wreaths into the water in a heartfelt tribute.
Remembering the victims
The workers tragically lost their lives when a large cargo ship, which had experienced a power failure, collided with the bridge, leading to its catastrophic collapse while they were engaged in pothole repairs. This heart-wrenching incident not only claimed lives but also had significant repercussions for the Port of Baltimore, which was forced to shut down for several months in the aftermath. Fortunately, the port managed to recover by late 2024.
Challenges ahead for recovery
Despite the resurgence of the Port of Baltimore, new tariffs introduced during the Trump administration now pose a serious challenge to its continued recovery. The families’ gathering serves as a poignant reminder of both the human cost of the tragedy and the ongoing struggles faced by the local economy.
“We will always remember our loved ones,” said a family member during the ceremony. “This day is for them.”
