Georgian athletes shine at Tbilisi Grand Slam’s thrilling second day

The second day of the Tbilisi Grand Slam showcased exhilarating judo performances, captivating spectators with local heroes and international competitors. The event saw Georgian judokas delivering outstanding displays of skill, much to the delight of the packed stadium.

Gold rush for Georgian judokas

Tbilisi, a picturesque city, served as the backdrop for an impressive day of judo, where the atmosphere was electric. The audience was treated to remarkable competitions, particularly in the -73kg category, where Lasha Shavdatuashvili, a 2012 Olympic Champion, mesmerized the home crowd. His stellar performance culminated in a gold medal, making him the first Georgian male to win gold at this year’s event.

Shavdatuashvili’s victory was celebrated in front of enthusiastic fans, and he received his medal from Georgia’s Minister of Sport, Mr. Shalva Gogoladze.

International competitors shine

In the women’s -63kg category, Canada’s Beauchemin-Pinard delivered a standout performance, securing gold in her first tournament since the Olympics. She faced off against France’s Deketer, taking an early lead and maintaining her advantage throughout the match. Her achievement was recognized by the French Ambassador to Georgia, H.E. Sheraz Gasri, who presented her with the medal.

Hungary’s Szofi Ozbas also made headlines in the -70kg category. Transitioning from -63kg, she faced Olympic medallist Sanne Van Dijke and showcased remarkable tenacity, overcoming a significant size disadvantage to clinch the gold medal. Her success was honored by Mr. Levan Nozadze, President of the Georgian Judo Federation.

Another highlight of the day was Vedat Albayrak’s impressive performance in the -81kg category. After initially trailing, Albayrak rallied to secure a waza-ari score, ultimately winning the title. The medal ceremony for his category was officiated by Mr. Shengeli Pitskhelauri, Deputy Head of the Georgia State Security Service.

As the event continues, Tbilisi remains a hub of thrilling judo action, with the home team already celebrating two gold medals and several bronze victories earned in dramatic fashion.
