The Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Thursday, targeting multiple towns shortly after the militant group Hezbollah advised the Lebanese government to refrain from negotiations regarding its disarmament. The strikes illustrate the ongoing tensions and complexities surrounding the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.
Israeli military strategy and warnings
In a statement from Israeli army Arabic spokesperson Avichay Adraee, it was revealed that residents of several coastal towns near the Lebanon-Israel border were given advance warnings to stay away from residential buildings that were identified as targets. These locations, according to the Israeli military, were utilized by Hezbollah for military purposes.
The Israeli forces stated that their operations were aimed at “military infrastructure for Hezbollah in those areas, including weapons storage facilities … constructed in the centre of civilian-populated areas.” This assertive action comes nearly a year after a US-brokered ceasefire was established, which effectively ended a two-month period of intense conflict.
While many residents evacuated the targeted areas prior to the strikes, Lebanon’s health ministry reported at least one injury resulting from the attacks. Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian emphasized the necessity of these measures, stating, “We will not allow Hezbollah to rearm themselves, to recover, build back up its strength to threaten the state of Israel.”
Lebanon’s response to Israeli aggression
Simultaneously, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam convened with his cabinet in Beirut to discuss a framework devised by the Lebanese military aimed at disarming Hezbollah and other armed groups. Following the discussions, Information Minister Paul Morcos remarked that the cabinet acknowledged the army’s progress, stating, “despite continued obstacles, foremost among which is the continuation of Israeli hostilities.”
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the Israeli strikes, asserting that “every time Lebanon expresses its openness to peaceful negotiations… Israel intensifies its aggression.” He noted that since the ceasefire took effect, Israel has consistently demonstrated its unwillingness to engage in meaningful negotiations.
According to Israeli claims, their airstrikes have predominantly targeted Hezbollah officials and military assets. However, the Lebanese government, which supports the disarmament initiative, contends that these operations have often harmed civilians and damaged infrastructure unrelated to Hezbollah.
Despite the mounting pressure, Hezbollah has remained steadfast in its refusal to disarm. The group’s secretary-general, Sheikh Naim Qassem, expressed a commitment to continue fighting, regardless of any limitations on their capabilities. Analysts suggest that Israel’s aggressive air campaign, which began in September 2024, has already had a significant impact on Hezbollah’s military strength.
Both sides continue to accuse one another of breaching the ceasefire, which was intended to bring an end to the recent conflict. The hostilities reignited when Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel in support of Hamas, prompting a wave of Israeli airstrikes in retaliation. Since the ceasefire was implemented, over 270 individuals have reportedly lost their lives and around 850 have sustained injuries due to the ongoing Israeli military operations, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
