Israeli strike kills six children in Gaza, military cites ‘technical error’

by editor

In a tragic incident on Sunday, ten individuals, including six children, lost their lives due to an Israeli airstrike in Nuseirat, Gaza. Hospital officials report that the attack targeted a water collection point in the area. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) attributed the casualties to a “technical error” during the operation.

The IDF stated that their intended target was an Islamic Jihad militant. However, due to the error, their munitions landed “dozens of metres from the target.” The military expressed that the incident is currently under review and acknowledged the reports of civilian casualties. In their statement, the IDF conveyed, “We regret any harm to uninvolved civilians.”

Casualties from additional strikes

In a separate incident, emergency health officials reported that an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza City struck a group of civilians, resulting in the death of 11 people and injuring approximately 30 others. Additionally, in the town of Zawaida, an airstrike on a residential home claimed the lives of nine, including three children, according to officials from Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Following this, Al-Awda Hospital reported that another strike on a group of individuals in Zawaida resulted in two more fatalities.

While the Israeli military indicated it was unaware of the strike on the home, they noted that over the past 24 hours, they had targeted more than 150 locations, including weapons storage facilities, missile launchers, and sniping posts. The IDF holds Hamas responsible for the civilian casualties, claiming the militant group operates within densely populated areas.

Ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis

Negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire, releasing Israeli hostages, and facilitating humanitarian aid into Gaza have so far proven unsuccessful. A significant point of contention remains the presence of Israeli troops during any ceasefire period. Israel has stated their intention to conclude military actions only once Hamas surrenders, disarms, and agrees to exile—conditions that Hamas has flatly rejected. On the other hand, Hamas has expressed willingness to release the remaining 50 hostages, about 20 of whom are believed to be alive, in exchange for a cessation of hostilities and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces.

The ongoing conflict, which ignited following a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 individuals in Israel, primarily civilians, and has led to the abduction of 251 hostages. Conversely, the Israeli military report indicates that the ensuing offensive has resulted in over 58,000 Palestinian casualties, mostly among women and children, according to data from the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between combatants and civilians. Furthermore, the Israeli military has confirmed that 890 of its soldiers have died since the conflict began.
