Protests erupted in Nairobi on July 7, commemorating 35 years since Kenya’s landmark rally advocating for multiparty democracy. The planned demonstrations coincided with increased tensions in the country, following violent confrontations between law enforcement and citizens in recent weeks.
Police presence and roadblocks
As the protests unfolded, major thoroughfares leading into the city were heavily monitored, with police implementing strict measures to control access. Authorities turned away vehicles and restricted pedestrian movement, allowing only those with essential duties to proceed. The significant police presence contributed to an atmosphere of unease, resulting in many businesses choosing to remain closed.
Clashes and unrest in surrounding areas
In addition to the barricades surrounding key governmental buildings, confrontations occurred in various towns, including Kitengela. Here, protesters lit bonfires and engaged with police forces, who responded with tear gas to disperse the crowds. The unrest comes in the wake of previous protests in June, which tragically resulted in at least 16 fatalities, highlighting the increasingly volatile situation.
