Liverpool FC has announced the retirement of the number 20 jersey worn by Diogo Jota, in a poignant tribute to the late footballer. The decision was confirmed on Friday through an official statement shared across the club’s platforms.
A lasting legacy
The Premier League club made this impactful decision after consulting with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family. This gesture will extend to all squads, including the LFC Women and Academy teams, reflecting the profound respect and admiration the club holds for Jota’s contributions and character.
In their statement, Liverpool emphasized that this initiative serves as a recognition of the significant role Jota played in the team’s successes over the past five years. It also acknowledges the deep personal connections he forged with teammates, colleagues, and fans alike. The club remarked, “What Jota meant – and continues to mean – to teammates, colleagues, and supporters has been evident in the tributes that have followed since he and his brother, André, passed away.”
Tragic loss
Diogo Jota, aged 28, and his brother, André Silva, who was 25, tragically lost their lives in a road accident in Zamora, Spain, on July 3. An initial investigation by the Guardia Civil suggests that a combination of wheel issues and speeding may have led to the crash of the Lamborghini Huracán they were driving, which subsequently caught fire after the collision. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
André Silva was also a notable figure in the world of football, having played for FC Penafiel in the Portuguese second division. In honoring Diogo Jota, Liverpool FC has made a powerful statement about community, remembrance, and the lasting impact of a beloved player both on and off the pitch.
“20 was the number [Jota] wore with pride and distinction,” the club remarked, highlighting his contribution to countless victories.
