Over 190 fatalities in tragic boat accidents in Democratic Republic of Congo

At least 193 lives were lost in two devastating boat accidents this week in northwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as reported by local authorities and state media.

Details of the accidents

On Thursday, a boat carrying nearly 500 passengers experienced a catastrophic fire before capsizing in the Congo River, as confirmed by the country’s humanitarian affairs ministry. Fortunately, 209 survivors were successfully rescued from the waters near the village of Malange.

Just a day earlier, on Wednesday, state media indicated that a tragic incident involving a motorized boat resulted in the deaths of 86 individuals, primarily students, in the Basankusu territory. This disaster was attributed to “improper loading and night navigation.” A local civil society organization has placed the blame for this incident on the government, alleging that the actual death toll may be higher than reported.

Challenges of river transport

The exact causes of these accidents remain unclear, but the frequency of boat capsizings has risen sharply in the central African nation, where river transport is vital for connecting remote villages. Many residents prefer traveling by boat due to its cost-effectiveness compared to road transport.

However, these older wooden vessels are frequently overloaded beyond capacity with passengers and cargo, and they often lack essential safety equipment such as life jackets. Furthermore, the practice of nighttime navigation significantly hinders rescue operations in the unfortunate event of an accident.
