Pakistan convicts 108 PTI members over 2023 protest violence

by editor

On Thursday, Pakistan’s judiciary sentenced 108 members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, previously led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, to imprisonment due to their involvement in widespread protests against the military that occurred in May 2023.

Among those sentenced is Omar Ayub Khan, a notable leader within PTI and the designated opposition leader, who received a 10-year prison term. Despite not participating directly in the protests, he was convicted by an anti-terrorism court for allegedly facilitating violence and conspiring to incite riots and arson, as reported by various news outlets.

Political repercussions and party disqualification

The recent verdicts have led to the disqualification of six PTI lawmakers from their parliamentary positions, further diminishing the political clout of the party. This development has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who have characterized the sentences as indicative of a troubling trend for democracy in Pakistan. PTI chairman Gohar Ali Khan condemned the convictions, labeling the charges against Ayub and other members as “baseless.” He highlighted the timing of these verdicts, noting they coincide with planned rallies commemorating the third anniversary of Imran Khan’s own legal challenges.

“The leaders of the opposition in both houses (of parliament) were punished solely on the basis that they were loyal allies of Imran Khan’s political narrative, public representation and constitutional struggle,”

PTI reiterated its intention to contest the court’s rulings in a formal statement shared on X.

Background of the protests and ongoing legal issues

The protests that erupted on May 9, 2023, were ignited by Khan’s arrest during a court appearance at the Islamabad High Court. Following his detention, demonstrations escalated into violence as supporters of Khan were accused of assaulting military personnel and vandalizing government properties. Defense attorney Changaiz Kakar stated that at least ten individuals lost their lives amid the turmoil, leading to a stringent crackdown on PTI.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 and faces over 150 legal challenges, including serious allegations of terrorism and leaking state secrets. His supporters maintain that these accusations are politically motivated, aimed at dismantling the influence of his party.

Even though Khan is barred from participating in the upcoming 2024 general election, candidates affiliated with PTI, contesting as independents, managed to secure the majority of seats in Pakistan’s national assembly.
