PSG secures 13th Ligue 1 title with six matches remaining

Paris Saint-Germain achieved a historic milestone on Saturday by clinching their 13th Ligue 1 title after a narrow 1-0 victory over Angers, solidifying their dominance in French football. This latest triumph sets a new record, as they secured the championship with six matches still to play in the season.

Key moments from the championship match

The match, held at the sun-soaked Parc des Princes, was a jubilant occasion for PSG. The team only required a draw to secure the title, but striker Désiré Doué had other plans, scoring the decisive goal to ensure their victory. This latest success marks PSG’s 11th league title since the Qatari Sports Investments (QSI) took ownership of the club in 2011, adding to their previous championships in 1986 and 1994.

Following the final whistle, coach Luis Enrique was celebrated by his coaching staff, who lifted him into the air amidst the ecstatic players who reveled in their achievement, completing a lap of honour around the pitch.

Looking ahead to future challenges

With their eyes set on additional glory, PSG now turns its focus to the upcoming French Cup final against Reims, scheduled for May 24. A victory in this match would secure a consecutive domestic double under the leadership of Enrique.

Meanwhile, the competition intensifies at the top of the league table as second-placed Monaco is set to face Brest, while Lyon will host Lille. Both matches carry significant implications as teams strive to secure their places in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Despite the win, PSG’s performance on the field exhibited some struggles against an Angers side that has been relegation-threatened and has not scored in their last five matches. A notable moment came when Yahia Fofana made an impressive save from midfielder Vitinha’s long-range attempt just before halftime.

It wasn’t until the 55th minute that Doué volleyed in a precise cross from Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to break the deadlock. Ousmane Dembélé, the league’s top scorer with 21 goals, entered the match in the second half but was unable to extend his tally.

“We are thrilled to have achieved this historic milestone,” said a club official.
