Spanish activists return home after Israel intercepts Gaza flotilla

by editor

A flotilla consisting of 42 boats, carrying approximately 450 activists, recently set out to challenge Israel’s naval blockade and deliver symbolic aid to the beleaguered Gaza Strip, where humanitarian conditions have severely deteriorated due to ongoing conflict. The mission, however, was met with interception by Israeli forces, leading to the detention of many activists.

Return and reception at Madrid Airport

Upon their return to Madrid International Airport, the activists were met with a warm welcome from dozens of family members and supporters who gathered to show their solidarity. Among those who spoke out was Spanish journalist Nestor Prieto, who claimed that Israeli officers “pointed their weapon lasers at our vital parts” and employed tactics of sleep deprivation on those detained. These allegations have raised significant concerns regarding the treatment of the activists during their custody.

Diplomatic tensions and responses

In response to the allegations, Israel’s Foreign Ministry dismissed them as “brazen lies,” clarifying that individuals who remain in detention opted for formal deportation processes instead of choosing voluntary return to Spain. Far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir commended the prison staff at the Ketziot facility for their management of the activists, labeling them as “supporters of terrorism.”

The arrests have triggered diplomatic backlash from various countries, including Turkey, Colombia, and Pakistan, which criticized Israel’s actions. Furthermore, Greece has lodged a formal protest concerning the treatment of its nationals involved in the flotilla. This interception occurred during a time when U.S. President Donald Trump urged Israel to cease airstrikes on Gaza and proposed a new ceasefire plan, which both Israel and Hamas have tentatively agreed to in anticipation of upcoming negotiations in Cairo.
