Venezuela conducts military drills amid escalating US tensions

In a display of military readiness, Venezuela has commenced extensive military exercises aimed at safeguarding its airspace from potential foreign threats. These drills, which began on Tuesday, involve the country’s army, militias, police forces, and community leaders aligned with President Nicolás Maduro’s government.

“We will continue in our determination to prepare ourselves to defend our homeland in all areas, whatever the threat, its intensity, its proportion,”

stated Venezuelan Defence Minister General Vladimir Padrino López during a broadcast on state television. The exercises come in response to rising tensions with the United States, particularly following orders from the Trump administration that dispatched warships close to Venezuelan waters.

Escalating US military actions in the region

Recent months have witnessed a series of US air strikes targeting vessels in the Caribbean, with a notable attack highlighted earlier this week by US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth. This strike reportedly hit two boats suspected of drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific, resulting in six fatalities.

Since the initiation of the Trump administration’s anti-drug operations in the region, there have been 19 recorded strikes that have claimed the lives of at least 75 individuals. Analysts interpret these actions as a possible strategy to apply pressure on Maduro, who faces narcoterrorism charges in the United States.

In his defense, Maduro has accused the US government of orchestrating a fabricated conflict against him, emphasizing the urgency of military preparedness within Venezuela.

Mobilization and civilian participation in defense efforts

With the US air strikes commencing in early September, the Venezuelan military’s focus has shifted towards strengthening its capabilities, especially concerning vessels navigating the eastern Pacific, a key route for cocaine trafficking from major drug-producing nations.

President Trump has justified the strikes by asserting that the United States is engaged in an “armed conflict” with drug cartels, alleging that these vessels are operated by foreign terror organizations responsible for flooding American cities with illicit drugs. However, the Trump administration has not provided concrete evidence to substantiate these claims, prompting calls from various US politicians, including members of his own party, for greater transparency regarding the operations and their legal justifications.

In an effort to bolster national defense, Maduro has actively mobilized Venezuela’s military since the onset of US strikes, urging civilians to enlist in the armed forces. During a visit to a recruitment center in late September, Defence Minister Padrino López called for citizens to stand ready to defend themselves “from imperialist aggression against Venezuela.” The civilian militias, established by the late President Hugo Chávez, aim to integrate volunteers into national defense efforts, providing military training and engaging in large-scale exercises.
