Brazil’s Carnival kicks off in Rio with vibrant Carmelitas street parade

by editor

The vibrant streets of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro came alive on Friday as the iconic Carmelitas street parade marked the opening of Brazil’s renowned carnival season. This festive event, which took place along a steep route beneath the historic Carmelite Convent, attracted large crowds eager to celebrate.

Celebratory atmosphere in Santa Teresa

As samba bands filled the air with rhythmic music, revelers made their way uphill through the picturesque historic district, creating a lively atmosphere that signaled one of the first major street celebrations of the carnival festivities.

In anticipation of the bustling days to follow, organizers have arranged a second, smaller procession scheduled for Saturday morning. This event is specifically designed for local residents, allowing them to engage with the carnival spirit before larger blocos take center stage in the coming days.

A unique cultural tradition

The Carmelitas group derives its name from the nearby Convento de Santa Teresa, closely linked to a local legend of a nun who ventured out to join a celebration. To honor this tale, dancers participating in the parade don habits and march alongside a whimsical giant doll dressed in similar attire, further enriching the colorful spectacle.

Having begun in the 1990s, inspired by local gatherings at Parque das Ruínas, the Carmelitas parade has grown significantly over the years, now drawing thousands of participants and spectators alike, eager to partake in this cherished cultural tradition.
