A devastating fire broke out at a commercial complex near Tehran, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 11 individuals and leaving dozens more injured, according to reports from state media.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Arghavan commercial complex, located in the city of Andisheh, situated to the west of Tehran. Images aired on state-run television depicted the dramatic scene of a multi-storey building engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke pouring into the sky.
Extent of the damage and response
Initial assessments indicate that the fire resulted in injuries to 41 people. The complex, which housed over 250 commercial units and 50 office spaces, has been described as a bustling hub of activity.
In light of the tragedy, the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office of Shahriar has initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire and identify those responsible. As part of this inquiry, an arrest warrant has been issued for the contractor responsible for the building’s construction.
Previous incidents raise alarm
Preliminary investigations suggest that the building’s composite facade may have significantly contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. This hazard has been a point of concern for experts, who have previously issued warnings following similar events. Notably, in June 2020, a powerful explosion linked to gas canisters ignited a clinic in northern Tehran, resulting in the loss of at least 19 lives. Furthermore, a catastrophic fire at the Plasco shopping centre in January 2017 claimed the lives of 22 people, including 16 firefighters.
“The rapid spread of fire due to the building’s materials is a serious concern that must be addressed to prevent future tragedies,” safety experts have cautioned.
