Five skiers die in avalanches in western Austria’s Alpine region

Five skiers tragically lost their lives in a pair of avalanches that struck the Salzburg Pongau region of western Austria on Saturday, according to local authorities. The first avalanche occurred in the Gastein Valley, located south of Salzburg city, where four skiers were killed and three others were affected; two suffered injuries, with one in critical condition, while a third individual managed to escape without harm.

Gerhard Kremser, the district head of the Pongau mountain rescue service, expressed his sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the importance of awareness regarding avalanche risks. He stated,

“This tragedy painfully demonstrates how serious the current avalanche situation is,”

highlighting the numerous and explicit warnings that have been issued concerning the potential dangers.

Rescue operations and previous incidents

In response to the avalanches, a coordinated rescue operation was launched, involving four helicopters along with teams from mountain rescue services and the Red Cross, including search dogs. These teams were deployed to assist the injured and to recover the bodies of the victims.

Just hours before the Gastein Valley avalanche, a female skier was recovered from a separate avalanche in the Bad Hofgastein area, at approximately 2,200 metres elevation. While several other avalanches were reported in the vicinity, fortunate circumstances prevented further casualties.

Recurring avalanche threats

Kremser extended his condolences to the families affected by this tragedy, reiterating the critical nature of the avalanche situation in the area. Avalanche incidents have become all too common during this season; just a few days earlier, a 13-year-old boy lost his life in an avalanche while skiing, and a 58-year-old skier was killed in a similar event the week prior.

In light of these recent occurrences, authorities are strongly advising skiers to remain vigilant, carefully consider official guidance, and heed weather warnings to mitigate the risks associated with skiing in avalanche-prone areas.
