Israel intensifies military operations in Lebanon amid deadly clashes with Hezbollah

The Israeli military has escalated its offensive in southern and eastern Lebanon, particularly overnight into Saturday, as confrontations with Hezbollah militants intensify in the region.

Heavy bombardment leads to casualties

The bombing campaign reached new heights on Friday night, with Israeli forces reportedly launching at least 12 airstrikes on the town of Nabi Chit located in the eastern Baalbek district. Hezbollah claimed that Israeli troops conducted aerial infiltrations into the town during the assault. The Lebanese health ministry reported that these strikes resulted in the deaths of at least 41 individuals, stating,

“The series of raids launched by the Israeli enemy on the town of Nabi Chit and surrounding towns in the Baalbek district resulted in a total of 41 citizens killed and 40 others wounded.”

In addition to civilian casualties, Lebanon’s military confirmed the deaths of three soldiers, attributing their fatalities to the intense shelling that coincided with an Israeli commando operation.

Further developments on Saturday revealed that another six people, including four children, lost their lives in a separate incident involving an Israeli strike on the town of Shmistar in eastern Lebanon. In response, the Israeli military confirmed attacks on Hezbollah targets across southern and eastern Lebanon, asserting that they had eliminated several commanders and destroyed military installations, including command centers.

Ongoing tensions and military operations

The escalation comes amid a broader regional conflict, ignited when Hezbollah launched missiles at Israel earlier in the week as retribution for the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In a separate operation, the Israeli military announced that its special forces undertook a mission deep within Lebanon aimed at gathering intelligence about missing air force navigator Ron Arad, who has been unaccounted for since his capture in 1986. The Israeli army noted that no injuries were reported among its forces during this operation, but they were unable to locate any evidence related to Arad.

Following the clash, Hezbollah confirmed that its fighters engaged the Israeli troops as they advanced towards a cemetery in Nabi Chit. The militant group stated that the confrontation intensified after the Israeli forces were detected, prompting them to launch heavy fire before retreating.

In light of these developments, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stern warning to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, suggesting that Lebanon would face severe consequences if it did not take action to disarm Hezbollah. Katz stated,

“If the choice becomes protecting our civilians and the safety of our soldiers or Lebanon, we will choose to defend our civilians and our soldiers, and the government of Lebanon and Lebanon will pay a very heavy price.”

Amid the escalating violence, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon, called for discussions between Lebanon and Israel to halt the ongoing hostilities. She cautioned,

“As bad as things are today, they are set to get even worse. Talks between Lebanon and Israel can be the game changer needed to save future generations from going, time and again, through the same nightmare.”
