Former President Barack Obama had his inaugural meeting with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Saturday at a local childcare center, where they engaged with preschoolers in a lively atmosphere.

Reading and singing with children

During their visit, Obama and Mamdani shared a reading of the book Alone and Together, captivating the young audience. They also led a delightful singalong featuring the beloved children’s song Wheels on the Bus, to which the children enthusiastically responded with their own rendition of Soda Pop.

Political backdrop and collaboration

This meeting occurs just over a week after Mamdani celebrated 100 days in office, marking a significant milestone in his tenure. Although they did not address reporters during the visit, Obama expressed his willingness to provide guidance and support to Mamdani, who at 34 is one of the youngest mayors in the city’s history.

Mamdani’s agenda emphasizes affordability and assistance for working families, aligning with some of the progressive ideals championed by Obama. Interestingly, the mayor has had two meetings with former President Donald Trump since taking office, which have been marked by increasing tensions. Recently, Trump has publicly criticized Mamdani’s policies and has hinted at the possibility of reducing federal funding for New York.

Obama, a leading Democratic voice, has offered to act as a sounding board for Mamdani.
