In a significant display of public dissent, thousands of demonstrators gathered in Nuuk on Saturday to voice their opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for the United States to annex Greenland, a self-governing territory under Danish sovereignty.

Demonstrators call for sovereignty

The protest saw participants waving Greenlandic flags as they marched through the heart of the city, culminating in a gathering outside the American consulate. There, they displayed banners and voiced chants emphasizing their desire for sovereignty. One protester passionately declared,

“We are not for sale. We are a free people,”

underscoring the sentiments of many who believe that Greenland should determine its own future.

Greenland’s aspirations for autonomy

Greenland’s Natural Resources Minister, Naaja Nathanielsen, articulated the territory’s aspirations for self-determination, stating that the people of Greenland seek to develop “on our own terms.” This sentiment reflects a broader desire among Greenlanders to maintain their autonomy and resist external pressures regarding their political and economic future.

The protest highlights not only the local concerns regarding Trump’s controversial proposal but also a growing movement among Greenlanders to assert their identity and independence in the face of global geopolitical shifts.
