Zelenskyy reveals 55,000 Ukrainian casualties amid ongoing conflict

In a poignant interview with French public television channel France 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the profound human cost of the ongoing war, the status of negotiations, and Europe’s response to Russia. During the conversation, he shared rarely disclosed figures concerning military casualties, stating, “In Ukraine, officially, on the battlefield, the number of soldiers killed — whether career soldiers or mobilised — is 55,000. [Added to this is] a large number of people whom Ukraine considers to be missing.”

This figure has been met with skepticism from independent research organizations, many of which estimate that the actual number of Ukrainian military fatalities could range from 100,000 to 140,000 since the conflict escalated in 2022, according to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.

Challenges of negotiation and recent attacks

As trilateral talks unfold in Abu Dhabi, Zelenskyy criticized what he characterized as a coercive strategy employed by Moscow. He argued that Russia aims to increase the suffering of the Ukrainian people to compel them into what he termed a “compromise,” which he asserted is, in essence, an ultimatum from the Kremlin.

“If we lose this war, we will quite simply lose our country’s independence,” he stated emphatically.

This statement comes on the heels of renewed Russian military strikes, which claimed the lives of two individuals in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region due to a drone attack on Wednesday. The day before, Russian forces targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amidst plunging temperatures that, in some areas, reached nearly -20°C.

Western alliances and the future of Ukraine

When discussing the role of Western allies, Zelenskyy highlighted his friendship with French President Emmanuel Macron. “We are good friends… He called me to tell me that he was thinking about resuming dialogue with the Russians. He knows what I think. Putin’s interest is to humiliate Europe. But it is very important that Emmanuel works to bring peace. It will be beneficial for the whole world if there is no more war in Ukraine,” he remarked.

Zelenskyy further analyzed the power dynamics between Moscow and Western nations. He posited that if Russian President Vladimir Putin “is not afraid of Europeans,” it is because they have enjoyed a secure existence in a world they have constructed for themselves. “Europe is very democratic… That is precisely why Ukraine is choosing the path towards Europe,” he explained, referring to Kyiv’s aspirations to join the European Union by 2027.

In a stark contrast, Zelenskyy suggested that the Kremlin fears former U.S. President Donald Trump, who he believes possesses the ability to exert economic pressure, impose sanctions, and provide military support.

On Tuesday, Trump urged Putin to “end the war,” following a series of significant strikes on Kyiv. Zelenskyy concluded by emphasizing that the conflict in Ukraine transcends national borders, warning, “Ukraine’s neighbouring countries understand that they will be Putin’s next victims, that Russia will advance.”

He commended those in Europe who recognize this reality and are assisting Ukraine effectively, asserting, “We are all fighting to defend the European way of life.”

In a significant development, the European Union announced on Wednesday its intention to facilitate the purchase of additional British-made weapons for Ukraine as part of a €90 billion loan package that 24 EU member states aim to provide to Kyiv. The bloc’s 27 nations have agreed to allow certain non-EU countries, including the United Kingdom, to participate in this initiative in return for a financial contribution.
