STRASBOURG — Ursula von der Leyen will travel to the U.N. climate conference in Madrid on Monday, her first day as European Commission president.

The trip is a highly symbolic gesture, aimed at reinforcing von der Leyen’s commitment to make the climate and her proposal for an ambitious European Green Deal the centerpiece of her presidency.

Von der Leyen announced her plans to go to Madrid at a news conference in Strasbourg just minutes after the European Parliament voted to confirm her and her College of Commissioners.

“I feel it’s very important that the European Commission is represented in Madrid with the European Green Deal, which gets started now. So it sits very happily with our ambitions,” she said.

Spain offered to host the annual climate conference after Chile, facing social unrest, said it could not handle the logistics, though Chile will continue to act as chair of the event, which runs until December 13.
