EU Parliament President David Sassoli goes into coronavirus quarantine

European Parliament President David Sassoli has gone into quarantine after coming into “contact” with a member of his staff who tested positive for coronavirus.

“I am fine and have no symptoms, he tweeted Thursday, adding that he would remain in self-isolation “for the required period to carry out the necessary checks.” According to a Parliament official, Sassoli will be required to stay in self-isolation for eight to 10 days.

Sassoli made the announcement a few days after Commission President Ursula von der Leyen went into self-isolation following a meeting in Portugal at which a person who had tested positive for the virus was present. She had since then tested negative for coronavirus.

Last month, European Council President Charles Michel postponed the leaders’ summit and went into isolation after a security officer with whom he had been in close contact tested positive.
