Ludovic Orban renominated as Romanian prime minister

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis nominated outgoing Prime Minister Ludovic Orban to form a new government on Thursday, a day after Orban’s cabinet was ousted by parliament.

Iohannis — from Orban’s National Liberal Party (PNL) — has said he would favor the country heading to an early election. However, that cannot legally happen until the parliament rejects two nominations from the president for a new prime minister within a 60 day period.

It is not clear how parliament will now proceed.

Some political parties consulted by Iohannis earlier Thursday still had to hold internal consultations to decide whether to back an election, the president said.

“Until then, we’re taking the next step: nominating a person tasked with forming a new government,” he said in announcing his decision to again put forward Orban, the president of the PNL.

Marcel Ciolacu, the president of the opposition Social-Democrat Party (PSD) — which triggered the no-confidence vote in parliament — said before Iohannis’ announcement that he would consider referring Iohannis to the Constitutional Court if he proposed Orban again.

However, the PSD may not favor heading to an election since it is currently polling well below its main rival. The PNL holds 46 percent support versus 21 percent for the Social Democrats, according to POLITICO’s Poll of Polls.

The PNL minority government had been in office for three months, after replacing a Social Democrat government that fell in October.
