Poland’s presidential election — by the numbers

by editor July 14, 2020
July 14, 2020

Poland’s presidential election could scarcely have been closer. After weeks of close polling and indecisive exit polls after Sunday’s vote, the incumbent Andrzej Duda just squeaked through ahead of challenger Rafał Trzaskowski.

Duda, who is backed by the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, won 51.03 percent of the vote in the second round runoff after a campaign that even the president himself referred to as “very brutal.”

The knife-edge result reveals a country starkly divided between the Catholic conservative message of PiS and a more progressive vision from Civic Platform’s Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw. Duda hoovered up votes in the PiS heartland of rural eastern Poland, doing especially well with older voters.

With counting now over and the full data available, here’s POLITICO’s analysis of where the race was won and lost.
