EU diplomat calls for a more transactional foreign policy approach

BRUSSELS — Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat, has emphasized the necessity for the EU to adopt a more transactional approach in its foreign policy. She stated that the bloc should seek greater respect for its interests in return for its economic contributions on the global stage.

Speaking to the EU’s 145 ambassadors at a conference in Brussels on Monday, Kallas remarked, “The question is whether the EU should become transactional too. In many ways it is time we should.” She highlighted the importance of acknowledging the differences in historical and cultural backgrounds of various nations, noting that the EU cannot expect the same treatment from others as it does from its member states or allies.

Strengthening Global Partnerships

Amid rising tensions, particularly with U.S. President Donald Trump threatening a trade war, the EU is intensifying its efforts to forge stronger connections with regions like South America, Mexico, and India. This month, all 27 commissioners are set to travel to these areas to enhance diplomatic ties.

Kallas stated, “We need to put the European flag up more. We are the predictable partner, we are the reliable partner, but we are often taken for granted. And we shouldn’t [be].” She recalled a conversation with a prime minister from an Asian nation who expressed frustration, saying, “We have a lot of attention for you but you never have attention for us.”

Increasing Engagement in Africa

Furthermore, Kallas urged for increased diplomatic engagement in Africa, highlighting the growing influence of countries like Turkey, Russia, and China, which are taking advantage of perceived European “loopholes.” She emphasized the need for the EU to not only prioritize its interests but also to establish a more active presence in regions where it has traditionally been less engaged.
