Donald Tusk expresses nostalgia for the UK in heartfelt social media post

In a poignant message directed at the United Kingdom, former European Council President Donald Tusk has expressed that Britain remains cherished within the European community. Tusk, who served in the role from 2014 to 2019 and played a significant part in the Brexit negotiations, took to social media on Thursday to convey his sentiments.

Support for Brexit wanes among Brits

In his post, Tusk shared a YouGov poll that revealed a significant drop in support for Brexit among the British public, now at a post-referendum low of just 30 percent. Accompanying his message, he added a winking-face emoji, underscoring the bittersweet nature of his remarks.

A history of firm negotiations

During the tumultuous Brexit negotiations that followed the United Kingdom’s referendum vote to leave the European Union in 2016, Tusk adopted a stringent stance. He dismissed various proposals that sought to maintain some trade advantages for the U.K. after its departure from the EU. Tusk famously stated that Britain would need to choose between a “hard Brexit” and “no Brexit,” emphasizing the gravity of the situation. He also remarked that there was a “special place in hell” for those who advocated for Brexit without a viable plan.

The U.K. officially severed ties with the EU on January 31, 2020, marking five years since that pivotal moment in history.
