Elon Musk warns of repercussions against EU officials following €120M fine

by editor

Elon Musk has expressed his outrage over a €120 million fine imposed on his social media platform X by the European Union, criticizing the fine as excessively punitive and vowing to direct his response at the officials responsible for the decision. Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, took to X to voice his concerns, stating,

“The ‘EU’ imposed this crazy fine not just on [X], but also on me personally, which is even more insane!”

He further suggested that his reaction should extend beyond the EU itself to the individual decision-makers behind the penalty.

The EU fine and its implications

The European Commission’s fine against Musk’s platform was announced on Friday as a consequence of breaches of transparency regulations that X is subjected to under the EU’s Digital Services Act, which governs content moderation for very large online platforms. The Commission asserted that the platform’s altered blue checkmark feature, which transformed from indicating verified users to a paid status, was misleading. Additionally, it claimed that X’s advertising library lacked clarity and failed to provide adequate public data access for researchers.

A spokesperson for the Commission indicated that the penalty was directed at X, but it also encompassed its entire corporate structure, including Musk and his companies, X Holdings and xAI. This led Musk to criticize the EU, claiming,

“The EU woke Stasi commissars are about to understand the full meaning of the ‘Streisand Effect.’”

The term refers to the phenomenon where efforts to suppress information inadvertently draw more attention to it.

Reactions from U.S. officials

Musk did not specify how he plans to respond to the fine or which specific individuals he intends to confront. He also suggested that the EU should be disbanded entirely. The hefty fine has sparked backlash from U.S. officials, who have condemned the EU’s actions as an infringement on free speech. Vice President JD Vance criticized the penalty, emphasizing that the EU should promote free speech rather than target American companies with what he described as “garbage” regulations.

When asked about Vance’s comments, Henna Virkkunen, the Commission’s Executive Vice President for Tech Sovereignty, clarified that the DSA is not about censorship but focuses on ensuring transparency from platforms like X. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed concerns about the fine, stating that it represents an attack not only on X but on all American tech platforms, declaring that “the days of censoring Americans online are over.”

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau added that Europe cannot seek security from the U.S. while undermining U.S. interests through actions taken by the EU. Andrew Puzder, Trump’s envoy to the EU, also criticized the fine as a manifestation of excessive EU regulatory control aimed at stifling American innovation.

The fine adds complexity to the already strained relationship between the EU and the Trump administration, which has previously warned of potential tariffs on the bloc if it continues to penalize American tech giants. Ongoing trade discussions have revolved around the U.S.’s call for Brussels to reconsider the DSA and other regulatory measures.

While the fine has garnered cautious support in Brussels and other European capitals, reflecting a desire among some officials to enforce regulations on U.S. tech firms, there remains notable dissent among European politicians who align more closely with U.S. interests. Geert Wilders, a far-right Dutch politician, expressed his discontent by stating,

“Nobody elected you. You represent no one. You are a totalitarian institution and can’t even spell the words freedom of speech.”

He called for the abolishment of the Commission rather than accepting fines against X.

It is important to note that this fine is just the initial phase of the EU’s investigation into X, which will continue to examine the content shared on the platform. X has yet to respond to requests for commentary regarding the fine.
