A commitment to compromise
Lecornu’s assurance comes in response to demands from the Socialist Party, which is anticipated to be a key ally in negotiations moving forward. The party had insisted that he refrain from utilizing Article 49.3 of the constitution—a clause that has sparked intense debate due to its implications for legislative power. Lecornu is scheduled to engage with leaders from the Socialist Party later on Friday, marking a critical step in his approach to governance.

By ruling out the use of Article 49.3, Lecornu may face challenges in advancing his legislative agenda within a divided parliament. This provision permits the government to bypass a vote, but it simultaneously grants opposition parties the right to propose a no-confidence motion, thereby elevating the stakes surrounding its use.
