ATHENS — A criminal investigation has been initiated against Afroditi Latinopoulou, a Greek far-right Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and leader of the Voice of Reason party, amid allegations that her party’s founding declaration contains forged signatures.
On Tuesday, Greece’s Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis addressed parliament, revealing that a case file concerning Latinopoulou was opened in January 2025 and is currently under the scrutiny of a prosecutor. The investigation aims to confirm the legitimacy of the signatures on the founding declaration of the party.
Allegations and Political Context
Copies of the contested document, which purportedly includes forged signatures, have been sent from the Supreme Court to the Interior Ministry, the body responsible for overseeing elections and political parties in Greece. Under Greek law, political parties are required to collect a minimum of 200 signatures from eligible voters to qualify for participation in elections, and it has been suggested that some of these signatures may be fraudulent.
“These are absurdities stemming from fear of the rise of our political party and originating from attacks by a political opponent, who is known for his vulgarity in Greece,” an official from the party stated.
Latinopoulou previously faced controversy when she was expelled from the ruling New Democracy party in 2022 after making derogatory remarks about a television presenter. She criticized her ousting, attributing it to “woke culture.” Subsequently, in 2023, she established the Voice of Reason party and successfully secured a seat in the European Parliament.
Party Ideology and Future Plans
The Voice of Reason party is characterized as a contemporary patriotic movement focused on maintaining Greek identity and values, encapsulated in the slogan “Fatherland, Religion, Family.” Latinopoulou aligns herself with other prominent female figures in the far-right political spectrum, such as Marine Le Pen of France and Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy. Her platform is notably anti-abortion and anti-immigration, with proposals to restrict LGBTQ+ individuals from careers within the educational sector.
