Greenland’s newly elected Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, representing the center-right party, made a compelling call for unity within the government on Friday to confront the mounting pressure from the United States. This statement came just ahead of the arrival of U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
Coalition government formed at a critical juncture
Nielsen emphasized the importance of setting aside political differences, stating, “It is very important that we put aside our disagreements and differences … because only in this way will we be able to cope with the heavy pressure we are exposed to from outside.” His remarks highlight the urgency of solidarity among Greenland’s political leaders as they navigate this challenging diplomatic landscape.
The formation of a new coalition government was announced on the same day, consolidating four of the five political parties within Greenland’s legislature. Nielsen’s Democrats emerged victorious in the elections held on March 11, a significant milestone for the center-right party.
Geopolitical significance of Greenland
This new government assumes office at a crucial time, with U.S. President Donald Trump having made repeated threats regarding the Arctic island. Trump has not dismissed the possibility of utilizing military force or economic measures to assert control over Greenland, which has been a self-governing Danish territory for many decades.
Greenland is strategically important due to its vast reserves of critical minerals, as well as its location in the Arctic, making it a focal point for both geopolitical interests and environmental considerations.
Vice President Vance’s delegation is expected to include notable figures such as his wife Usha Vance, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. Their visit signifies the U.S.’s ongoing interest in the region.
In a show of support for Greenland’s new leadership, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated the coalition government and reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to being a respectful partner. She remarked, “You deserve partners who respect you and treat you as equals. And the European Union is proud to be such a partner for you.”
