Hamas expresses readiness to engage in immediate Gaza ceasefire negotiations

by editor

Hamas has declared its willingness to commence negotiations for a new ceasefire in the Gaza Strip without delay. In a statement issued late Friday, the Palestinian militant organization confirmed it is “seriously ready to enter immediately into a round of negotiations” following a U.S.-brokered proposal for a 60-day truce.

This potential ceasefire agreement aims to halt the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, a situation that has led to extensive devastation across Gaza and heightened tensions throughout the broader Middle East since October 2023.

Potential ceasefire agreement under discussion

U.S. President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that a ceasefire arrangement could be finalized as soon as next week. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit Washington on Monday, where he is anticipated to engage in discussions with Trump regarding the terms of this proposed ceasefire.

As reported, Hamas has yet to confirm its acceptance of the proposed ceasefire terms. Trump mentioned earlier this week that Israel had agreed to the conditions; however, there has been no official confirmation from Israel regarding its acceptance.

Terms and humanitarian considerations

While specific details of the ceasefire terms remain undisclosed, media reports suggest that they may involve the release of several Israeli hostages held by Hamas—comprising 10 living individuals and 18 deceased— in exchange for Palestinian prisoners currently held by Israel. The terms are also expected to facilitate an immediate increase in humanitarian aid entering Gaza, coordinated by the United Nations and the Red Cross.

Despite the imminent discussions surrounding a potential ceasefire, Israel has intensified its military operations in Gaza, including directing civilians to evacuate from the outskirts of Gaza City and increasing airstrikes and ground operations in the area this week.
