Increase in American applications for British citizenship following Trump’s return

by editor

LONDON — The number of Americans seeking British citizenship has surged significantly following Donald Trump’s return to the White House earlier this year. Recent statistics from the Home Office indicate a remarkable 50 percent increase in citizenship applications from the United States, with a record 2,194 submissions recorded between April and June, compared to just 1,465 during the same period last year.

Impact of political climate on citizenship applications

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, remarked that these figures reflect the capital’s commitment to its “liberal values.” He stated,

“Prominent figures in the U.S. and U.K. deliberately talk down our country, and in particular our capital city,”

emphasizing that the new statistics serve to contradict those narratives.

Since the beginning of 2025, the Home Office has processed applications from 4,125 U.S. citizens, marking a 40 percent increase compared to 2024. Khan noted,

“For many Americans I speak with, it’s because of our values,”

as he prepares for Trump’s historic second state visit, which is set to commence Tuesday.

London’s unique appeal

Khan elaborated on London’s allure, stating that the city serves as the U.K.’s financial, legal, and governmental hub, offering an unmatched ecosystem that includes prestigious universities, rich culture, and thriving creative industries. He highlighted the importance of London’s “liberal values,” asserting that they are essential to the city’s identity, which embraces diversity as a strength rather than a societal threat.

The ongoing tensions between Khan and Trump were evident during the U.S. president’s recent visit to his Scottish golf courses, where he labeled Khan as “a nasty person” who has “done a terrible job” in his role. In response, Prime Minister Keir Starmer came to Khan’s defense, referring to him as “a friend of mine, actually.”
