Israeli military instructed to intercept aid flotilla with Greta Thunberg on board

The Israeli military has received orders to prevent an aid flotilla, which includes renowned Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, from reaching the shores of Gaza. Defense Minister Israel Katz announced this directive on Sunday, emphasizing that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) should use all necessary means to halt the vessel, known as the ‘Madeleine.’

Details of the Mission

In a statement on X, Katz declared, “Israel will act against any attempt to break the blockade or assist terrorist organizations — at sea, in the air and on land.” The ‘Madeleine,’ operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, departed from Italy earlier this month with a mission characterized as a “peaceful act of civil resistance.” Its cargo includes essential supplies intended for the people of Gaza, such as baby formula, diapers, women’s sanitary products, water desalination kits, medical supplies, crutches, and children’s prosthetics.

Current Status of the Flotilla

As of Sunday afternoon, the organizers reported that the ship was approximately 160 nautical miles from Gaza. Tracking capabilities for the vessel are available online. In response to the military’s warning, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition expressed their determination on Instagram, stating, “Israel’s defense minister has once again threatened unlawful force against civilians, attempting to justify violence with baseless smears. We will not be intimidated.”

This announcement from Israel comes amid heightened tensions in the region, as earlier reports indicated that at least five individuals were killed by gunfire while en route to two aid distribution points in Gaza that are supported by an Israeli and U.S.-backed organization.
