Italy’s negotiations with SpaceX on Starlink at a standstill, minister reports

Discussions between Italy’s far-right government and SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, regarding a secure communications system for defense and diplomatic use have come to a halt, according to Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. In an interview with La Repubblica published on Saturday, Crosetto revealed that there is currently “no [technical] discussion” taking place concerning a potential agreement to utilize the Starlink satellite system.

Political tensions affecting negotiations

The impasse is largely attributed to the overshadowing of technical aspects by Musk’s controversial public statements. Crosetto highlighted that the ongoing negotiations have been affected by the polarizing nature of Musk, who has also been a senior adviser to former U.S. President Trump. This connection has placed the Starlink discussions at the center of political discourse in Italy.

Earlier this month, opposition parties urged the Italian government to cease negotiations with SpaceX following Musk’s assertion that he might disable the communication system in Ukraine. This system is crucial for providing vital telecommunications support to Kyiv’s forces amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Future of the Starlink deal uncertain

The possibility of a Starlink agreement was first revealed in January after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Trump’s residence in Florida. Meloni has been keen on fostering strong ties with the Trump administration while also nurturing a relationship with Musk.

Crosetto expressed hope that technical discussions could resume “when the controversies and the times have calmed down.” He emphasized, “The question is, what is most useful and safe for the nation,” reflecting the importance of the potential deal amid the complex geopolitical landscape.
