A highly anticipated phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled for this afternoon, with the timing set between 9 and 11 a.m. in Washington, D.C. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the details, explaining that both leaders will address the critical topic of “further normalization” of relations between their countries, alongside the ongoing situation in Ukraine, where Russia has been engaged in a significant military conflict.
Topics on the agenda
Peskov noted that prior discussions have laid the groundwork for this upcoming call. He referenced a meeting between Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Putin in Moscow last Thursday, as well as a diplomatic encounter between U.S. and Russian officials that occurred in Istanbul on February 27. Additionally, Peskov mentioned a previous phone conversation between Trump and Putin that took place on February 12.
Building understanding
“Certain discussions have already taken place,” Peskov remarked, indicating a level of understanding between the two nations. However, he emphasized that there are numerous issues still to be addressed during the call, reflecting the complexities of international relations at this critical juncture.
“So there is a certain understanding indeed. But there are many issues [on the agenda],” he added.
