Macron urges Trump to focus anger towards Putin over Ukraine conflict

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron asserted on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “lying” about his intentions to peacefully resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine. This statement followed a significant attack on Kyiv earlier that day, which resulted in the tragic deaths of at least eight individuals.

“Putin must stop lying at last,” a visibly passionate Macron expressed, addressing the media during his visit to Madagascar. He emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “He continues to bomb Ukraine, he continues to kill people in Ukraine.” Macron’s remarks come at a critical juncture for the international community, which is rallying behind American-led initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Call for Focused Frustration

The proposed deal from Washington includes potential territorial concessions, notably the recognition of Crimea — illegally annexed by Moscow in 2014 — as part of Russian territory. This has been a contentious point, with U.S. President Donald Trump expressing frustration on social media about Ukraine’s reluctance to accept such demands and critiquing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In contrast, Macron believes that Trump’s anger should be directed solely at Putin. “There is an aggressor, Russia, and there is a victim, Ukraine,” he remarked. “American frustration should be directed at only one person: President Putin.” This perspective underscores the broader narrative of accountability in the conflict.

Trump’s Reaction to Ongoing Violence

While Trump has previously been vocally critical of Zelenskyy, he expressed discontent with Putin following the fatal attack on Kyiv. On his Truth Social platform, he stated, “Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!” Trump’s comments reflect a growing urgency for a resolution amid rising casualties and escalating violence.

“There is an aggressor, Russia, and there is a victim, Ukraine,” Macron said.

As the conflict continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes peace and stability in the region.
