Netanyahu warns Macron: Recognizing Palestine boosts terrorism risks

by editor

In a recent phone call, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conveyed to French President Emmanuel Macron that acknowledging Palestine as a sovereign state would represent a significant victory for groups like Hamas and Iran. Netanyahu’s remarks came during a discussion on the potential implications of such a recognition for regional security.

Concerns over terrorism and regional stability

Netanyahu articulated his strong opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, arguing that it would effectively serve as a substantial reward for terrorism. He asserted, “a Palestinian state established a few minutes away from Israeli cities would become an Iranian stronghold of terrorism,” highlighting his apprehensions regarding the geopolitical ramifications.

This exchange follows Macron’s recent statements indicating that France may consider recognizing a Palestinian state within the next few months. “I’m not doing it for unity, or to please this or that person. I’m doing it because at some point it will be fair,” Macron noted during an interview with a French broadcaster, underscoring his belief in the necessity of this step.

Escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Since the onset of conflict in October 2023, Israel has engaged in extensive military action against Hamas following a violent attack that involved hostage-taking. Reports indicate that over 50,000 individuals have died as a result of Israel’s retaliatory operations. Currently, Israel occupies approximately one-third of Gaza, and while ceasefire negotiations are under consideration, they remain stalled due to unresolved demands.

The humanitarian conditions in Gaza have reached alarming levels, with the United Nations declaring that the situation is “likely to be the worst it has been” since the onset of these aggressive military actions 18 months ago. Critical shortages of medical supplies, fuel, and water exacerbate the ongoing crisis, complicating efforts for relief and recovery.
