Pope Leo XIV urges global leaders to end warfare in inaugural message

by editor

Pope Leo XIV has made a powerful appeal to world leaders to cease all acts of warfare during his inaugural address to the faithful following his election as the new leader of the Catholic Church. In a moving speech delivered in St. Peter’s Square in Rome on Sunday, he stated, “I also turn to the powerful of the world repeating the always timely appeal: never again a war.”

Addressing ongoing global conflicts

In his address, which coincided with the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II, the Pope highlighted the pressing global conflicts that threaten peace today. He referred to the current situation as a “piecemeal Third World War,” a term first introduced by his predecessor, Pope Francis. This characterization underscores the fragmented yet pervasive nature of contemporary conflicts affecting various regions around the globe.

For the first time since his election last week, Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, directly addressed the most significant global turmoil, including Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and the escalating crisis in Gaza. He expressed deep empathy for those impacted by these conflicts, stating, “I bring in my heart the suffering of the beloved people of Ukraine.” His words resonated with the crowd, as he called for a “just, authentic and long-lasting” peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the urgent need for the liberation of prisoners of war and the repatriation of Ukrainian children who have been forcibly removed from their families.

Support for humanitarian efforts and peace initiatives

Turning his attention to the conflict in Gaza, Pope Leo XIV reiterated the necessity for the international community to respond with compassion. He advocated for an “immediate ceasefire, humanitarian support to the exhausted civil population and the freeing of the hostages.” In a world rife with strife, his call for humanitarian intervention is a poignant reminder of the need for solidarity and support for those affected by violence.

Additionally, the Pope commended the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, expressing hope for sustained peace in the region. His remarks reflect a commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding among nations, stressing that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a collaborative effort towards healing and resolution.
