The chaotic launch of Jeremy Corbyn’s new political party, Your Party

LIVERPOOL, England — The inaugural conference of Your Party, co-founded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, was marked by disarray as Sultana made a noted appearance at the ACC conference centre before announcing her decision to boycott the first day. In her interaction with supporters and the media, she voiced concerns regarding the influence of “nameless and faceless bureaucrats” who, she claimed, were operating behind the scenes to undermine the party’s mission.

As the event unfolded, it became clear that Your Party is grappling with internal strife even at this early juncture. Intended to serve as a strong left-wing alternative to the Labour Party, which Corbyn once led, the conference was overshadowed by contentious debates following the exclusion of members from the Socialist Workers’ Party (SWP). This decision, justified by officials on the grounds of existing internal regulations, sparked accusations from Sultana of a “witch hunt” orchestrated by Corbyn’s allies.

Internal conflicts overshadow the launch

The weekend was originally envisioned as a unifying moment for the fledgling party, which has already faced numerous challenges, including disputes over funding and leadership direction. Although many attendees displayed enthusiasm for the party’s vision, a pervasive sense of turmoil loomed over the proceedings. During her address on the second day, Sultana cautioned that the decision to exclude certain left factions reflected tactics commonly used by the Labour Party’s right wing.

Witnessing the growing tensions between Sultana and Corbyn has been particularly striking. After Sultana’s unilateral announcement of the party’s formation in July, she faced criticism for managing membership funds, amassing accusations of withholding over £800,000 in donations—a claim she later attempted to clarify, stating that £600,000 had been returned.

Corbyn expressed frustration over the logistical challenges of the conference, stating, “We got very close to having to borrow a lot of money” to move forward with the event. The party’s launch occurred without a formal legal structure or proper registration with the Electoral Commission, adding to the confusion and financial strain.

Seeking unity amid division

Despite the discord, there remains a desire among members to establish a cohesive leadership model. During the conference, members voted in favor of adopting a “collective leadership” approach, aiming to build consensus through a central executive committee. Independent MP Shockat Adam emphasized the unique opportunity to create a new political entity, while warning of the risks posed by ongoing divisions.

Some members, like Amanda, who previously supported the Green Party, expressed trust issues with the Greens and affirmed her commitment to Your Party, highlighting a clear ideological distinction. Former MP Claudia Webbe noted that while the media may portray Your Party as chaotic, the enthusiasm and passion displayed at the conference were palpable and indicative of a grassroots movement eager for change.

However, concerns linger. As members deliberated the party’s structure, a sense of urgency emerged. Julian, an attendee, voiced frustration over redundancy in debates and amendments, stressing the need for action-oriented discussions that address pressing societal issues.

Meanwhile, Corbyn’s presence continues to resonate with many, with attendees referring to him as the best prime minister Britain never had. Despite his suspension from the Labour Party, his commitment to grassroots initiatives remains a cornerstone of his political identity, even as criticisms of his legacy surface within the conference.

Ultimately, as members voted on a name, Your Party was confirmed as the chosen title, symbolizing a commitment to democratic processes and a radical redistribution of power. The party will operate under a caretaker committee comprising three independent MPs until an executive committee can be elected in February.

With the sun setting over Liverpool, questions linger about the future of Your Party. As Webbe aptly noted, “Nobody votes for divided parties.” Yet for those who passionately believe in this new political venture, the call for unity and a shared vision remains strong, as evidenced by the enthusiastic responses during Corbyn’s closing speech—“Are we the alternative?”—met with resounding affirmations of “yes.”
