The West wants WW3, Romania’s presidential front-runner tells conspiracist Alex Jones

Romanian ultranationalist Călin Georgescu, who won the annulled first round of the country’s presidential election last year, says the West wants to orchestrate the outbreak of a “third world war.”

Georgescu made the inflammatory comments, which echo Russian narratives about the EU and NATO, to American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who hosts a popular show reaching 3.6 million followers on X.

Georgescu’s stunning surge to victory in the Nov. 24 first round of the Romanian presidential election led to the annulment of the results amid fears of a Russian influence effort in support of his campaign. Despite the controversy, he continues to ride high in the polls ahead of an election do-over set for May, and could still gain power in Bucharest.

Georgescu told Jones that the EU wants to “take control” of NATO before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

“When they control via [Secretary-General Mark] Rutte — the chief of NATO — they try to impose their rules and to push as much as possible for the Third World War in the region, via in particular Romania,” he said.

According to Georgescu, the “real door” to start “the Third World War in Ukraine” is Romania. “Without Romania, they cannot control this war,” Georgescu said.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin ordered his troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, touching off a grinding war of aggression that has reshaped Europe’s security architecture and has triggered fears of potential further revanchist steps by the Kremlin chief.

In the interview, Georgescu dismissed allegations that he was connected to Moscow, which purportedly boosted his campaign via a massive TikTok operation.

“Of course I have nothing to do with Russia. I don’t know anybody, just a few people, like scientists, but I have nothing to do with politicians in Russia,” Georgescu said.

Georgescu’s prior applause for Putin, along with his threats to cut off aid to Ukraine, raised fears that his victory would bring Romania — which has been a solidly pro-EU and pro-NATO member of the Western establishment for years — into the Kremlin’s orbit.

The ultranationalist politician also railed against “globalists” who want to start a war in Europe in his interview with Jones: “I find that the European Union here is the political arm of the globalists, and NATO is the military arm.”

The “globalist elite” — which he also referred to as the “financial-banking system” and “the endeavors of the World Economic Forum,” as well as “oligarchs” and “real fascists” — are, according to Georgescu, interested in expanding the war in Ukraine. (Georgescu himself previously expressed admiration for the leaders of Romania’s Iron Guard, a fascist paramilitary organization from the 1930s.)

Romania is set to re-run its presidential election on May 4, with a run-off scheduled for May 18. Although the ultranationalist Georgescu has said he intends to participate in the rerun, the Constitutional Court could still disqualify him over allegations of undeclared funding.

His continued popularity among voters is partly due to deep suspicions of cronyism and nepotism among the country’s traditional governing parties, who are seen by many Romanians as having secretly pulled the strings to have the first vote annulled.
