Zelenskyy firmly opposes land concessions in ceasefire negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has categorically ruled out the possibility of ceding any Ukrainian territory to Russia as part of a ceasefire arrangement. This strong stance comes in response to suggestions made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next week.

In a post on Telegram, Zelenskyy affirmed, “The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question already is in the Constitution of Ukraine. No one will deviate from this — and no one will be able to. Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier.” His remarks underscore Ukraine’s commitment to its territorial integrity.

Trump’s territorial swap proposal

Trump’s remarks on Friday hinted at a potential “swapping of territories” as a component of a ceasefire agreement. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the Trump administration is exploring a proposal wherein Russia would agree to halt military actions along the frontlines in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, regions where its control is less significant compared to the Donetsk and Luhansk areas.

In exchange for these concessions, Russia would retain dominance over the Donbas region. A U.S. special envoy recently returned from talks with Putin, revealing that the Russian president had outlined the conditions under which Russia would consider halting hostilities in Ukraine. However, details of these terms remain undisclosed.

Zelenskyy’s call for inclusive dialogue

While acknowledging the complexity of the ongoing situation, Trump mentioned, “It’s complicated. There’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both, but we’ll be talking about that.” He is expected to meet with Putin on August 15 in Alaska, with a senior European official suggesting that the Russian leader’s willingness to engage is influenced by coordinated pressure from the U.S. and its allies.

In his early Saturday statement, Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine’s readiness to collaborate with Trump but emphasized that decisions made in the absence of Ukrainian input are “unworkable.” He stated, “Any decisions that are against us, any decisions that are without Ukraine, are at the same time decisions against peace. They will not achieve anything. These are stillborn decisions.”
