Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is strategically intensifying his diplomatic efforts to engage with Donald Trump’s administration as he prepares for potential negotiations with Russia. By emphasizing Ukraine’s abundant mineral resources, Zelenskyy aims to leverage these assets in his discussions.
“The coming weeks could be very busy in diplomacy,”
Zelenskyy stated in a recent post on Telegram, expressing his appreciation for “cooperation with President Trump.” This diplomatic initiative comes just ahead of the annual Munich Security Conference, where Zelenskyy will be joined by U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Russia and Ukraine.
Ukraine’s resource strategy amid increasing pressures
As the war continues and the death toll rises, Kyiv is facing growing pressure to find a resolution. Trump has previously shown skepticism regarding U.S. military support for Ukraine; however, his recent comments indicate a willingness to negotiate, provided Ukraine opens its mineral resources — particularly rare-earth elements — to American interests. These minerals are crucial for various applications, including defense systems, electronics, and energy production.
Zelenskyy is keen to showcase Ukraine’s natural wealth to attract global partners and strengthen the country’s negotiating position ahead of any peace talks with Russia. During an interview with Reuters, he mentioned his openness to the idea of facilitating access to Ukrainian mineral deposits, stating,
“The Americans helped the most, and therefore the Americans should earn the most. … I would also like to talk about this with President Trump.”
Potential collaboration in energy supplies
Moreover, Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine’s gas storage facilities as another potential area for collaboration. Prior to Russia’s invasion three years ago, Ukraine was a significant transit hub for Russian natural gas destined for Europe. Currently, the United States has emerged as the leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
“We’re ready and willing to have contracts for LNG supplies to Ukraine. And of course, we will be a hub for the whole of Europe,” Zelenskyy remarked.
In a statement made late Friday, Trump acknowledged the possibility of meeting with Zelenskyy next week while also noting his ongoing “very good relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
