Denmark praises European unity against U.S. tariff threats over Greenland

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has expressed gratitude for the support Denmark and Greenland are receiving from European nations in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to impose new tariffs aimed at exerting control over the Arctic territory.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Frederiksen emphasized the unified stance of European countries, stating,

“I am pleased with the consistent messages from the rest of the continent: Europe will not be blackmailed.”

She elaborated on the “intensive dialogue” she has maintained with allies such as the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, highlighting the broad support for Denmark’s position.

Support from European allies

Frederiksen stressed that Denmark is not seeking conflict but acknowledged the international implications of the situation.

“At the same time, it is now even clearer that this is an issue that reaches far beyond our own borders,”

she noted. Her remarks followed a collective response from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the U.K., all of which were identified in Trump’s tariff threat.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson echoed Frederiksen’s sentiments, asserting that European nations “will not let ourselves be blackmailed.” He further pointed out that this matter extends beyond the countries directly mentioned, labeling it an EU-wide concern.

Coalition against tariff threats

In a show of solidarity, the eight European nations collectively defended the “pre-coordinated Danish exercise” in Greenland, which Trump referenced in his Truth Social post regarding the tariffs. The capitals of these nations collectively argued that the exercise

“poses no threat to anyone,”

reaffirming their unwavering support for the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. They cautioned that U.S. tariff threats “risk a dangerous downward spiral” that could have far-reaching consequences.
