Lars Løkke Rasmussen demands inclusion of center-right parties in Danish talks

by editor

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, leader of the Moderates party, announced on Friday that he will halt negotiations regarding a new government formation with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen unless she engages with center-right parties. This decision follows a challenging political environment after Denmark’s March 24 election, where a stalemate left Rasmussen’s party with 14 seats, crucial for forming a majority government.

Political Impasse in Denmark

Despite winning the election, Frederiksen’s Social Democrats find themselves in a precarious situation, relying on Rasmussen’s support to solidify their majority. Rasmussen’s stance has placed considerable pressure on the Prime Minister, one of Europe’s prominent center-left leaders, as she navigates the complexities of coalition building in Copenhagen.

“We will not take part in further meetings with [Frederiksen] unless she takes that request seriously,” Rasmussen stated firmly. He is urging the Prime Minister to involve center-right parties in the discussions, especially after two weeks of negotiations with left-wing factions yielded minimal progress.

Calls for a Shift in Coalition Strategy

Rasmussen, often referred to as the kingmaker due to his pivotal role in the current political landscape, is advocating for a reevaluation of the coalition strategy. He emphasized the need for Frederiksen to temporarily set aside the notion of a center-left government and engage with Troels Lund Poulsen, the leader of the center-right Venstre party. Poulsen previously served as deputy prime minister in the outgoing coalition and has now proposed collaboration on economic policies.

Analysts in Denmark suggest that this outreach from Poulsen may have influenced Rasmussen’s decision to push for a shift away from the left-wing “red bloc.” As the political landscape evolves, it remains to be seen how Frederiksen will respond to these demands and whether she can effectively gather support to form a stable government.
