EU leaders extend congratulations to Rumen Radev following election victory in Bulgaria

by editor

Key European leaders expressed their congratulations to Rumen Radev after his party, Progressive Bulgaria, secured a decisive victory in the recent parliamentary elections held on Sunday. This election marks Radev’s return to a prominent political role, despite apprehensions surrounding his pro-Russia stance.

European officials respond to Radev’s election

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen conveyed her eagerness to collaborate with Radev for the “prosperity and security” of Europe. She emphasized Bulgaria’s essential role within the European community, stating, “Bulgaria is a proud member of the European family and plays an important role in tackling our common challenges,” in a post shared on X.

Similarly, European Council President António Costa reached out to Radev, stating, “As conveyed in our phone call this morning, I look forward to working together with you in the EUCO on our shared agenda for a prosperous, autonomous and secure Europe.” His message also appeared on X, highlighting the importance of unity among EU leaders.

Concerns over geopolitical implications

Rumen Radev, a former fighter pilot with a history of aligning with Russian interests, achieved a significant win in Bulgaria’s eighth election over the past five years. His campaign included strong criticism of opposing parties, accusing them of fostering an oligarch-dominated mafia state. Radev had previously stepped down from his position as president earlier this year to pursue the role of prime minister.

During his campaign, Radev made controversial statements, including calls for Ukraine to pursue peace negotiations and opposition to supplying arms to Kyiv. He has also maintained that his assertion regarding Crimea being “Russian” reflects a pragmatic view of the geopolitical landscape.

In a brief comment, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed his anticipation for continued collaboration with Radev on security matters, stating he’d “look forward to continued cooperation on shared security challenges” in a post on X.

However, the reactions from certain factions within the European Parliament were critical. Czech conservative MEP Tomáš Zdechovský remarked, “Bulgaria has sent a clear — and deeply concerning — signal,” suggesting that Radev’s election represents a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape. He noted, “Rumen Radev, a politician openly critical of support for Ukraine and long seen as sympathetic to Russia, appears to have secured a parliamentary majority. This is no longer just an election result — it is a serious geopolitical shift,” in a post on X.

Austrian Social Democratic MEP Andreas Schieder echoed these sentiments, warning that Radev’s victory could signal the entry of another ally of Putin into EU leadership, describing it as a “setback for Europe” and likening the political shift to handing over the baton from Hungary’s Viktor Orbán.
