Ukraine and Russia conduct prisoner exchange during Easter ceasefire

In a significant development amid ongoing hostilities, Ukraine and Russia executed a swap of 175 prisoners of war each on Saturday, coinciding with the commencement of a 32-hour ceasefire for Orthodox Easter celebrations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared images of the returning soldiers being greeted upon their return. This group comprises combatants from various fronts, including Mariupol, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia, with seven civilians also being part of the exchange.

“Some of them are wounded. Most have been in captivity since 2022. And finally — they are home,” Zelenskyy said.

Despite a stalemate in diplomatic negotiations to end the conflict, both Moscow and Kyiv have agreed to a temporary truce that began on Saturday and is set to last until midnight Sunday, aligning with Orthodox Easter, as announced by the Kremlin on Thursday.

Ceasefire and its implications

The prisoner exchange was facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, as stated by the Russian defense ministry. This comes on the heels of Zelenskyy’s recent visit to the UAE and other Gulf nations impacted by Iranian assaults, where he sought to bolster defense collaborations.

Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine’s commitment to the ceasefire, stating, “Ukraine will adhere to the ceasefire and respond strictly in kind. The absence of Russian strikes in the air, on land, and at sea will mean no response from our side.” He also indicated a willingness to prolong the ceasefire beyond the initial timeframe.

Pathways to peace

Highlighting the potential significance of the ceasefire, Zelenskyy remarked, “A ceasefire on Easter could also become the beginning of real movement toward peace — our side has made the corresponding proposal.” He confirmed that the concept of extending the truce has been communicated to Russian officials.

The developments surrounding the prisoner swap and ceasefire underscore a rare moment of cooperation amid a protracted and bitter conflict, raising hopes for possible future discussions aimed at peace.
