Yanis Varoufakis to face trial over past drug admission in podcast

by editor

ATHENS— Yanis Varoufakis, the former Finance Minister of Greece, has been formally charged and is set to stand trial for allegedly promoting drug use, as confirmed by his left-wing MeRA25 party in a statement on Wednesday. The trial is scheduled to take place on December 16.

Background of the Charges

Varoufakis, who held his position during the tumultuous financial crisis in 2015 under the left-wing Syriza government, remains a significant figure among European leftists. The legal action stems from remarks he made during a podcast, where he candidly discussed his drug experiences from approximately 36 years ago, specifically at a festival in Australia.

In a humorous take on his past, Varoufakis remarked,

“Determined not to do a Bill Clinton (remember the laughable ‘I didn’t inhale’?), I said I had.”

He acknowledged having tried marijuana and recounted a singular encounter with ecstasy at a Sydney festival in 1989, which, while initially enjoyable, led to a severe week-long migraine that dissuaded him from further drug use.

Political Implications and Reactions

Varoufakis described his intention behind sharing this anecdote as an effort to highlight the dangers associated with drug use, stating that “there is a price to pay” and emphasizing that addiction can lead to a loss of freedom.

The European Realist Disobedience Front party has accused the ruling center-right New Democracy government of manipulating the judicial system to target Varoufakis due to his outspoken nature. In their statement, they claimed,

“Although the Greek justice system’s stance on this case has provided much amusement to Greek society … this story is nonetheless dangerous.”

They argued that prosecuting a party leader for discussing past substance use is not just a trivial error but signals a judiciary that protects those in power while pursuing those who challenge the status quo.
