Activist Mahmoud Khalil criticizes Trump administration after detention release

by editor

Mahmoud Khalil, a prominent activist from Columbia University, has made strong claims against the Trump administration, asserting that it has failed to silence pro-Palestinian voices following his release from over three months in immigration detention. Speaking to the BBC after returning to New Jersey from a detention facility in Louisiana, he stated,

“My existence is a message”

to the administration. Khalil emphasized that efforts aimed at suppressing pro-Palestinian sentiments have ultimately proven ineffective.

Khalil became a leading figure in the pro-Palestinian protests held at the New York university last year. His arrest on March 8 sparked significant demonstrations across New York and Washington, D.C. The U.S. government is currently seeking to deport him, citing concerns that his activism poses a threat to foreign policy interests.

Commitment to advocacy

During a press conference at Newark Airport in New Jersey on Saturday, Khalil expressed his determination to continue advocating for Palestinian rights as well as for the rights of immigrants who he believes are “left behind in that facility” where he was detained. He criticized the White House for its approach to dissent, accusing it of attempting to “dehumanise anyone who does not agree with the administration.”

As he addressed supporters, Khalil held a bouquet of flowers given to him while shouting “free Palestine.” He was accompanied by his wife and their newborn son, who was born during his time in custody.

Legal battles and political implications

Among those supporting him at the press event was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic congresswoman from New York. She commented on Khalil’s release, suggesting it indicates that the Trump administration is faltering in its legal efforts to deport activists advocating for Palestinian rights in the U.S.

“The Trump administration knows that they are waging a losing legal battle,”

Ocasio-Cortez stated. She accused the administration of violating the law and utilizing isolated cases to intimidate others who share similar views.

Khalil’s remarks followed a judge’s order for his release from jail, which determined that he posed neither a flight risk nor a threat to his community while his immigration case is ongoing. Despite this, the Trump administration has pledged to appeal the judge’s decision as it continues to pursue his removal from the country.
